• Research Paper (2000-2500 words) I have the Annotated Bibliography Attached with Thesis

Draw on multiple sources from literature, history, and at least one other disciplines (such as art, sociology, cultural anthropology, political science, media studies), to formulate and explore an argument/a thesis that addresses issue related to Gypsy/Romani culture, the Roma(ni) people, or the tension between representations of Gypsies/Roma in fictional and in historical accounts.

Topics: If you are undecided, consider some of these broad topics, then brainstorm and narrow the focus by examining your ideas in relation to one or more of the texts we’ve read for class (Please relate to the novel Zoli by Collum McCann please be specific)

Research: What it is and what it is not.

A research paper is not simply an informed summary of a topic by means of primary and secondary sources. It is neither a book report nor an opinion piece nor an expository essay consisting solely of one’s interpretation of a text nor an overview of a particular topic. Instead, it is a genre that requires one to spend time investigating and evaluating sources with the intent to offer interpretations of the texts, and not unconscious regurgitations of those sources. The goal of a research paper is not to inform the reader what others have to say about a topic, but to draw on what others have to say about a topic and engage the sources in order to thoughtfully offer a unique perspective on the issue at hand.(from Purdue Online Writing Lab)

Sources: Use a minimum of 4 sources.

Format: Typed, double-spaced, on 8 1/2″ x 11″ typing paper; margins for text should be approximately 1″ to 1 1/2″ on top and left sides and 1″ on bottom and right; pages stapled together.

Citations: Use the new MLA (Modern Language Association) documentation style. Include a Works Cited sheet at the end of your paper.

Missed deadlines: Late papers will be penalized 1/3 of a letter grade for each day they are late, starting with the day following the due date.

Thesis: Education is the underlying issue under most of the Gypsies struggles and the reason for most of the negative stereotypes surrounding them, yet it is a very difficult cycle to break due to their nomadic lifestyle and their unchanged culture.

Research Question: Why do Gypsies incur so much discrimination and hostility? Was it always like this?

Gypsy musicians settled in Hungary and have been there for a long time.This text outlines the Gypsies history in Hungary.The Hungarians used to envy the Gypsies for their free lifestyle filled with music.Their music became very popular in Hungary and became in high demand for aristocrat festivities.The author also mentioned how gypsies fought alongside the Hungarians for their country.There is also background including the difference between the Gypsy tribes mentioned in this text.Things quickly changed for the Roma’s as culture in Hungary changed.This article mentions how the Gyspies have not changed their social structure with the times.This is what ultimately makes it harder for the gypsies to succeed.The gypsies continued with no education and it became harder for them to find work as their music became less popular and many turned to theft.This article does a great job of explaining why discrimination against the gypsies began.

Research Question: How do Gypsy parents feel about sending their children to school and why is it that so many Gypsies do not finish their general education?

The problem of lack of education for gypsies is something that is mentioned in most articles about them.Many authors correlate this issue to the bigger issue of crime in their society and negative stereotypes about them.The reasons for why is it hard for Gypsy Travelers to get an education is outlined in this article.The issues of their nomadic lifestyle and funding are some reasons brought up in this text for why Gypsy Traveler children fail to get a proper education. This is helpful because they are using data from interviews of Gypsy parents that were conducted, meaning that this is not the personal opinion of the author but, actual feelings of gypsy parents. Many parents that were interviewed expressed fear in sending their children to school because they never went and was unaware of what it would be like.This article talks about the base issue in most gypsy issues and that is the cycle of little to no education in their society.

Research Question: How are Gypsies treated differently when they are surrounded by those who are not Gypsies? What does family life look like for Gypsies?

This journal article is written about a Serbian Gypsy telling his life story.Dragoslav, the man telling his story, goes through the background of his town in Serbia and the history of Gypsies settling there. He talks about his family history which gives a perspective on when Gypsies got married and the reasons for their marriage. He also mentions topics of migration, hierarchy, ethnic relations, education and more.This article is also very informative for this assignment because he was a famous musician and explains how he was treated when he performed because he was a Gypsy.He also mentions the difference in the cultures from each place he traveled to. This article is a good recourse to get information and understanding on what it was like for Gypsies in every aspect.This is a strong source to include because of its firsthand knowledge of the Gypsy culture. Research Question: What does the economy for the Gypsy population look like and what kind of occupations do the Gypsies have, being that most of them do not finish school?

This author focuses on how Gypsies contribute to the society that they settle in.Since some Gypsies do settle in places for multiple years, governments have to find ways to deal with some problems that may arise by such a unique group of people in their city.He also mentions jobs that the Gypsies have and how many make an honest living.In this article there it is also mentioned how much the post war developments hurt the Gypsies and how the government dealt with it.This article explains the “problems” people feel Gypsies bring with them such as trespassing and public disturbance but also shows the contributions the Gypsies make to the cities they settle, such as supplying labor and goods. Many Gypsies work as carpenters, blacktopping, door to door salesmen, and more.

Research Question: How do people see they Gypsies and what crimes are they said to commit?

Gypsies are strongly hated by many groups of people and this author explains why people feel this way against the Gypsies.Some stereotypes that people believe about Gypsies mentioned in this article are that they are that they are skilled thieves, many are fortune tellers, they have multiple forms of identification with different names on each, they consider nature to be free to them and therefore get in trouble for trespassing, and more.Once the Nazi’s came into power the Gypsies were amongst one of the groups targeted and treated extremely poorly due to those stereotypes.After the war Gypsy communities were in such bad condition and even more restrictions were being put on the few communities still holding it together because of the communist rule. This article really shows the struggles the Gypsies had to go through.

Research Question: How did Gypsies have a part in their isolation from society and how do they deal with being out casted?

In this article there are more specific references to the discrimination the Roma faced and still continue to face, especially in Eastern Europe.The Roma have been struggling since their population decreased sufficiently during the holocaust.The author mentions how although the Gypsies were made targets, the isolated themselves from the rest of the population.This article is helpful because the author uses many statistics about the Gypsies history such as, how many were killed under Nazi regime and how many racial crimes were reported against the Roma. The author also seems to be unbiased about Gypsies.He shows both sides of what was done to them and what they were guilty of doing themselves.This author also goes through the struggle for the Roma people to settle in Nigeria.
