Empirically supported treatments must be scientifically based, meaning they must have undergone rigorous, randomized controlled, clinical trials that have met stringent criteria. Sounds impressive; however, as the APA, Division 12 Web site warns, “No scientific study can show that a psychotherapy shown to be beneficial for the average patient in a research setting will in fact be helpful to any particular patient treated by a particular therapist in the real world” (APA, para. 5). Individual differences and issues of cultural context are critically important when you evaluate ESTs for your client. So therein lies the challenge; first you have to research appropriate empirically supported treatments and then, even if they are available, you appropriately match these treatments to your client’s presenting problems and circumstances—the essence of evidence-based practice.

In this week’s Discussion, you practice researching ESTs. Next, in the Application, you use case studies to match presenting problems with appropriate ESTs.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Choose three presenting problems described in The Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner or in the DSM-IV TR. Conduct a literature review to find empirically supported treatments for each of the three presenting problems.

• Think about how you would conceptualize the three presenting problems you chose and consider whether your treatment might vary within diverse populations.

• Consider the strengths and weaknesses of the empirically supported treatments you selected for each presenting problem. Take into careful consideration the issues of individual differences and cultural contexts as discussed in the La Roche & Christopher (2008) article.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 a description of three empirically supported treatments. Include specifics on the strength of the empirical support for each treatment. Discuss what client populations the research suggests would benefit most from each treatment you selected.

Note: Put the three ESTs that you chose in the first line of your post. You will be asked to respond to a colleague who discussed ESTs that you did not.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources and use empirically supported research to support your points of view. Follow proper APA Style guidelines.
