Comment on the suitability of your peer’s proposed research question(s) and research design. Has your colleague chosen the most appropriate qualitative design to answer the question(s) posed? Why, or why not? What other design option(s), besides the one you selected for your own post, would you recommend to study the proposed research question? Review the ethical issues your colleague raised in his or her post and suggest other issues that should be considered when conducting this research.

1st Response: Bluntson

According to the Mayo Clinic, (2015) dysthymia is a persistent depressive disorder that usually comes and goes over a period of years. The question that I would want to ask a patient if I were a clinical psychologist would be, if they feel any differences since they have been taking medications and attending therapy. The approach I would use would be narrative analysis.

I would use narrative analysis because I would want to gain knowledge from each individual and learn what the medications are doing for them. Then I would compare my studies to see how effective certain medications are helping, or not helping them. “Narratives are powerful forms of giving meaning to experience. Narratives are stories with a clear sequential order, that connect events in a meaningful way for a definite audience. Story and narrative are often used interchangeably. Sequence is necessary for narrative. A narrative always responds to the question ‘And then what happened?’” (Frost, 2011).

I would talk to each individual one on one to see how effective their treatment has been for them or what we need to do to make their treatment more effective. I would want to figure out what is happening them or not helping them so we can come up with a better treatment plan or keep it the same because depression does not only effect the person with it. Depression effects everyone around them. I would concentrate on what we can do to get them better and back to their families.

The only ethical principle that I would have to use is getting informed consent from everyone to treat them. I would let them know that everything we are discussing is confidential.

2nd Response: Kinney

Dysthymia is also known as persistent depressive disorder and it is as stated in the DSM-5 “Depressed mood for most of the day, for more days than not, as indicated by either subjective account or observation by others, for at least 2 years” (DSM-5, 2013). In my review of the current material, I found that most of the previous research on this disorder has been done using quantitative methods. The aspect of this topic that I feel should be more studied using qualitative methods is the action of different treatments and how they interact with the persistent depressive disorder. This is also known as grounded theory. “Grounded Theory is an approach used to study action and interaction and their meaning” (Frost, 2011). The research question that I would ask would be “Does clinical counseling have any effect on persistent depressive disorder”. At times counseling alone does not help a patient however, counseling and medication therapy could work together to promote the most out of that patient’s illness. There are more than 1 qualitative approaches. One is as already mentioned at that is grounded theory, case studies, and narrative approach. That is just a few to name however, there is more approaches. Some of the characteristics is that these approaches are all observational approaches, they ask mostly open ended questions and they explore the action happening in each approach. A feasible design that I would create would be a small group of patients that suffer from the same illness, I would observe each of these participants with the same treatments to see the interaction of the treatment. Now, I would take notes and make case studies out of each participant with the different treatment options that have been used. This type of design may affect these patients by suffering from the illness with a treatment that may not be working. Every participant would be a different case and each case is effected by different actions. Therefore, it could make the depression just that bas as the correct treatment is being worked on.xc vv
