How does the applicant’s performance compare to that of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples. (E.g. what are the applicant’s principal strengths?) (500 words) One of Ebuka’s key strengths is his solution-mindedness, which he exhibited in growing GapCredit’s operations in Badagry, a remote location in Lagos. GapCredit is a microfinance startup providing financial services such as microloans to traders without a credit history selling consumer goods in the local markets. Using a daily repayment system, one in which field personnel collect a fixed amount of the loan daily from the traders and pay the same into the bank for the tenure of the loan, a key concern we faced in Badagry was the routes between the markets where the traders conduct their businesses and the banks where the field personnel deposit the monies collected from the traders. These routes were unsafe. Thus, our agents traveling daily to the banks with large sums in naira through these means was considered high risk. So, we had to figure out a safer alternative for our field agents to get these monies to the banks. Ebuka recommended the agent banking option – the larger commercial banks using agents to serve as small banks in strategic locations operating savings and disbursement services strictly. Although there was none at our preferred location, we found one within proximity. Subsequently, Ebuka convinced this agent to relocate to our preferred location by assuring him of a minimum number of daily customers (GapCredit’s loan officers). Beyond this, Ebuka discussed with the agent to ensure the money collected was retrieved daily because of the increased daily volume, ensuring its safety. Since implementation, we have received over $40K in repayments from traders in Badagry and ensured the continued safety of our employees. Please provide example(s) that illustrate why you believe this candidate will find success throughout their career. (Word count: 300)   One of Ebuka’s key strengths is his solution-mindedness, which he exhibited in growing GapCredit’s operations in Badagry, a remote location in Lagos. Focused on achieving results, Ebuka’s perseverance and drive will see him through his career.   Describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response. (500 words) Ebuka is non-confrontational. Focused on achieving results, he tends to leap past the reason for certain issues, avoiding conflicts with his subordinates.  During one of the review sessions with the team leads to discuss the progress across the various operational regions, Ebuka asked one of the team leads the reason his team members were not making progress in recoveries from certain borrowers whose loans had exceeded maturity by over two weeks. In response to Ebuka, the team lead started by saying “he did not understand the type of employees being hired at the moment” before giving his reasons for the lack of progress. Ebuka moved past this team lead’s initial comments and addressed the reasons given for lack of progress. After the meeting, I had a meeting with Ebuka and discussed the importance of addressing such statements immediately, ensuring overall team collaboration. I further explained the negative impact such statements can have on unity within the organization, especially if other team members such as the Human Resources Lead misconstrue his lack of comment as an alignment with the team lead’s position. Although Ebuka explained how he did not take the statement seriously, he understood my position and made a commitment to address such next time. Ebuka heeded my recommendation and called for a follow-up meeting to address the statement made by the team lead. In the meeting, Ebuka pressed to understand the reason behind the statement and noticed there was a conflict among the team members on how to effectively execute job roles. After the meeting, he coordinated with the HR personnel to address this conflict. and worked out a solution with all concerned parties, promoting harmony in the team. Community Beyond possessing strong technical and analytical skills, Ebuka is a highly supportive and dependable person on and off the job. I recall when we were putting together a retreat for the team to celebrate the expansion of our operations to the sixth state in Nigeria. Considering GapCredit’s operations began in March 2021, there was a need to celebrate this unprecedented growth in such a short time. Although assigned to Human Resources personnel to lead, Ebuka provided immense support to her towards planning the three-day event, without compromising attention given to his role. Beyond this, Ebuka also contributed to the many activities held during the event: from leading games to facilitating strategy sessions. Having personally witnessed the rigors of Graduate School, I understand the importance of a good support system to aid with assignments, research as well as on job applications and interviews. Thus, I believe Ebuka’s cohort will benefit positively from his supportive characteristics.
