Research question

What liquid is used to hydrate plants?

Can alternative liquids be used?

What question do you have about this project topic?

These questions help you build a background of understanding from your project.

Hypothesis:

A hypothesis is a prediction of what will happen in your experiment.

Your hypothesis should be in the form of an “If …then…because….” statement.

A hypothesis must include your independent and dependent variables.

Example- I am testing the affect of different liquids on the growth of plants.

A hypothesis I might make is “If I give the plant milk, then is will grow taller because milk has a lot of nutrients.”

My independent variable (variable I change in experiment; what is one change you are making?)- the liquids used to hydrate the plants; I chose milk.

My dependent variable (variable that changes as a result of what I did; what do you think that one change you made will do in the experiment and why?) – because I changed the liquid, the growth of the plant will change.

My constant variable (variables that stay the same throughout the experiment)- the type of plant I used, amount of liquid given to each plant, where the plants are located, time I hydrated each plant, the length of the experiment.

Materials

List of all materials and equipment needed for experiment.

Example- for this experiment I will need the following.

5 basil plants

Milk (100 mL each day)

Water (100 mL each day)

Orange juice (100 mL each day)

Hydrogen peroxide (100 mL each day)

Gatorade (100 mL each day)

A windowsill or large outdoor area for equal sunlight

Measuring cup or cylinder

Marker

Masking tape

ruler

Procedures

List the step-by-step procedures in your experiment. All steps and measurement should be included.

Place all 5 plants in the same area.

Using the masking tape and marker, label each plant with the name of the liquid it will receive. (ex- plant #1= “water”, plant #2= “milk”, etc.)

Measure and record the initial height of the plant using a ruler.

At 7 am, using the measuring cup, give the water plant 100 mL of water.

At 6 pm, measure and record the height of the plant.

Repeat steps 3-5 for each plant will their labeled liquid.

Measure and record the height of the plants for 8 days.

Data and observations

Write down observations observed in notebook

Take video and/or pictures of experiment before, during, and after.

Create tables and graphs to represent your data.

Can be used for both qualitative and quantitative data. There should be a description identifying what the data displays.

Day 7 3.6 in 2.6 in 2.4 in 2.7 in
Day 8 4 in 2.8 in 2.5 in. 3 in

Analysis and Discussion

Explain what happened during your experiment. Describe what went well with your experiment. Discuss any problems you encountered during your experiment.

The growth of the plants could be easily measured each day. After 8 days of measurement, I saw the plant given water was thriving and had the most growth at 2.5 inches.

The Gatorade had the second most growth at 2 inches. The growth could be from the Gatorade having a similar consistency as water and therefore may have been easier for the plant roots to take up.

The milk and orange juice had similar heights of 1.5 inches. The consistency of orange juice and milk is thicker than water and Gatorade. Because of this, it could have been harder for the roots to take in the liquid and harder for the plant to process.

Lastly the plant given hydrogen peroxide did not grow at all. The plant most likely died as a result of the chemical.

Conclusion

Discuss the independent and dependent variables and reexamine whether the hypothesis was correct or incorrect. Also describe ways that your experiment could be improved if it were to be repeated.

Must be written in paragraph form, summarizing the results of the experiment. If the data rejects the hypothesis, revise the hypothesis here.

My hypothesis was that milk (independent variable) would cause the plant to grow taller (dependent variable). According to my results do not support my hypothesis.

My tests ran smoothly, and I had no problems maintaining a schedule for hydrating and measuring the plants.

This experiment can be improved by using plants with a stronger root and vascular system such as a sunflower or rose because it may be able to receive the milk and orange juice easier.
